SEEAC recognises that many migrants of East and Southeast Asian heritage in the UK face complex welfare issues that extend beyond their destination country. As transnational individuals, the multitude of challenges that migrants face in their move and the problems faced by their left-behind families in their home countries shape their overall well-being and life experience. Such situations are especially true for migrant workers under short-term visa schemes and insecure status whom SEEAC works with, many of whom are trapped in debt bondage, putting their families back home in jeopardy while also facing discrimination and exploitation in their destination country.
To effectively support these migrants, it is essential to foster stronger collaboration between institutions both at home and in the destination countries. With the support of Unbound Philanthropy, SEEAC has developed a regional database that includes migrant rights organisations in Southeast and East Asia with those supporting these communities in the UK. This initiative aims to enhance collaboration by connecting like-minded organisations to understand the migrant context in their home and destination countries as well as their experiences in every migration stage, to assist them better and create a safer, more informed journey for migrants.
